James Mercer, who was Mary Ball Washington's attorney, built this house on a lot he purchased from her son, George Washington. A gambrel-roofed cottage typical of upper-middle-class dwellings in pre-Revolutionary Virginia, it was later expanded. Restored in 1963, it is owned by the APVA but is not open to the public.
