This one-and-one-half-story double cottage, combining an apothecary shop and a house, owes its survival to associations with George Washington: Washington called here, and Mercer served as a brigadier on his staff during the Revolution. Nearly demolished, it was saved by a group of Fredericksburg women and the APVA and restored by a leading Washington, D.C., architect.
