What appears to be a low structure is actually three and one-half stories in height, but earth fill from the construction of the nearby bridge has partially buried it. The sandstone is laid without mortar. Over the years it has served as a smokehouse for fish, a fertilizer plant, a brewery, and, during the Civil War, a morgue.
