The fine brickwork and details suggest that two of Jefferson's workmen may have provided the design and built the structure for this church, an exceptional example of the Jeffersonian Roman Revival. The Tuscan portico in antis is surmounted by a Doric entablature derived from the Baths of Diocletian. Four entrance doors provide access to the double aisles and the gallery. The interior is largely intact, though the pulpit is a Colonial Revival replacement. During the Civil War Clara Barton and Walt Whitman tended the wounded in this building.
