The five-bay wood-frame house, built first, follows the conventions of the colonial period with a hipped roof and entrance portico. Dr. Carmichael purchased the house in 1815 and a few years later erected the diminutive temple-form brick office and store. The trim boards of the eaves of the store mimic the moldings of the house.
