Rising above boxy school and museum additions, the ornate, pedimented dormers of the original Lake County High School building sport urn finials and corbeled compound brick chimneys. During the 1980s the abandoned school became a major mining museum. A bronze miner sculpted by Lori Atz greets visitors at the main entrance. The museum's Hall of Fame contains exhibits on famous miners such as prospector-turned-journalist George Hearst and Meyer Guggenheim, whose mines and smelters launched a family fortune that enriched eastern U.S. and European cities but gave nothing back to Leadville.
