A steep hipped slate roof with tiny hipped dormers, broad eaves, and snow catchers lends a Chateauesque air to this otherwise Neoclassical federal building with a dentiled cornice, slightly arched second-story windows, and round-arched first-floor windows with fanlights and keystones. The Leadville Herald Democrat praised the new building, with its handsome red and yellow brick-work and granite banding, but condemned as a waste of taxpayers' money the basement “lounging room for [mail] carriers and elegant marble wain-scoted lavatory with a $600 shower bath.” After the post office moved out in the 1970s, the city government moved in. Much of the marble and golden oak interior remains, as do the large interior transoms that brighten city offices.
