Wrapped as a spreading, L-shaped mass around a landscaped entrance turnaround, this is a fine example of the large “Norman” house popular during the period. Ornament is minimal. Its effect depends on intricately textured masonry walls and a complex composition of gables and turret caps, with openings informally disposed but so small and scattered as to suggest a slightly fortified effect. Although the house is substantially spoiled by additions made since 1960, the original integration of the house with its gardens, which were designed by Beatrix Jones Farrand, is still apparent. Sturges was a Providence lawyer; his wife was the daughter of Rowland Gibson Hazard.
