1810 with later ell addition. 4638 Tower Hill Rd. (U.S. 1)

The five-bay, center-door format used half a century earlier in the Marchant House (
SK41) is perpetuated in this comparably grand farmhouse. One central chimney becomes two to accommodate a central hall. Windows are larger in proportion to walls. As is characteristic of Federal houses, details are lighter. The heavy, spreading frame of the Marchant pedimented door, for example, becomes taller and thinner with the addition of a lighted transom and Ionic pilasters instead of the Marchant's Doric. Two pilastered dormers are inserted into the roof. The house sits high, still overlooking a panoramic landscape of fields down to the ocean.
