James Bailey practiced architecture in the area from the 1870s through 1900, and designed Old Main at Geneva College in Beaver Falls (
BE29), as well as the Butler County Courthouse of 1886 (
BU1). From the rhythm of the arches and the design of the square corner tower to the foliated capitals, his design for this gray, rock-faced sandstone church recalls H. H. Richardson's Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail in Pittsburgh (
AL1). Sculptural ornament in foliate and geometric patterns is integral to the design. A large educational wing north of the church is executed in stone in a compatible style.
