1903, Wood, Donn and Deming. 2211 Massachusetts Ave. NW

Wood, Donn and Deming's sophisticated hybrid of Colonial Revival and Beaux-Arts motifs was applied to a two-bay facade, an unusual rhythm for row houses where space was not constricted. Elegant and unusual details are found on all four floors. Channeled limestone rustication curves inward to frame the ground-story entry and window; second-story French windows open onto shallow balustraded balconies; carved limestone garlands are set beneath unframed third-story windows; and brick dormer windows are integrated into the upper wall, which continues above the cornice.
