Barker House, Manitou Springs, Colorado

1872. 819 Manitou Ave. (southwest corner of Manitou Ave.)

With its exotic, mismatched octagonal corner towers, this clapboard complex reflects Manitou's architectural evolution from primitive frame to fashionable Queen Anne Style. C. W. Barker started out with two frame houses to which he added a central lofting peak and other additions. The fourth-story pedimented gables and second-story porches strive to bring symmetry to an altered but still striking landmark, now a retirement home.
