This second campus for the high school represents the preference for a suburban site with such amenities as playing fields and off-street parking over a dense commercial location. The lakeside site was part of the land gift by A. J. Zilker (see AU45). Several years of environmental legal action preceded groundbreaking in 1972. This building replaced the historic Austin High School that was transferred to the Austin Community College system and is still in use at 1212 W. Rio Grande Street.
