This diminutive brick house exemplifies a form popular in the Federal period. The two-story central block, with the gable end facing the street, is flanked by one-story wings with side gables. The elliptical arch of the doorway and the fanlight in the gable add refinement to the basic elements. To ensure a proper draft, chimneys on the wings are inordinately tall, rising almost as high as the roof ridge of the central block. When Tillinghast Cook built the house, it was the seat of his 100-acre farm just outside of town. A great-granddaughter of the builder restored the house, which has served as Junior League headquarters since 1974.
