House

c. 1900. North corner of Avery and 10th sts.

This diminutive frame cottage compensates in detail and character for what it lacks in size. Basically Stick Style in spirit, with lingering Gothic Revival undertones and emerging Queen Anne details, it has a multiplicity of hipped and gabled roofs. Each gable contains scroll-sawn ornamentation, as do the spandrels, where overhanging panels cap angular first-floor walls. All this ornamentation gives the ensemble an altogether top-heavy effect, but the house is much too cute to warrant any real complaints.
