This classroom-library, the first structure built by and for the university, is a mix of varied architectural components that get along quite well. A one-bay pavilion with a Neo-Romanesque entry centers the nine-bay brick facade. The segmental-arched windows and the bracketed cornice are Italianate, while the prominent mansard roof with dormers lighting the third story is decidedly Second Empire. An open, arcaded octagonal cupola, topped with an onion dome, centers the roof and adds to the stylistic jumble. The exterior of Martin Hall, which now serves the School of Journalism, was restored in 1993.
