1818. 1101 Mulberry Rd.

Constructed for Colonel Joseph Martin, a tobacco planter and son of General Joseph Martin for whom Martinsville was named, the two-story brick house with a rear ell originally stood on Leatherwood Creek near Axton in western Henry County. In the early 1940s, a heavy rain that occurred while a basement was being dug caused a portion of the Federal house to collapse. Greenwood was reconstructed here using the original materials. Some modifications were made, including changes to the entrance and the second-story window above it. Set well back from the road, this three-bay brick house has a stepped brick cornice and a one-story porch with coupled Ionic columns.
