This three-and-half-story gable-fronted, painted brick building was constructed for use as a warehouse. George W. Kurtz purchased the building in 1876 and used it for a furniture store and funeral home. The tower with a mansard roof was added in 1888. Cast-iron cresting outlines all the roofs, which gives a highly picturesque Victorian aspect to the building. The City of Winchester purchased the building in 1968 and it now houses various commercial and institutional offices. Diagonally across the road, the three-story former Odd Fellows Building (1898; 45 E. Boscawen) is boldly capped by an oversized bracketed cornice.
