A German associated with the Seventh Day Anabaptists at Ephrata is said to have constructed this house. It is an astonishing regional version of a Georgian central-hall-plan house in an alternating dark brown and golden orange stone version of Flemish bond (see p. 4). Within is a handsome center hall with flanking pairs of rooms and corner fireplaces. This is one of several similar houses in the immediate vicinity, including the socalled Checkerboard house of 1754 on U.S. 322 near Brickersville, suggesting a regional subtype that is imitated in Lancaster today in the local permastone. It is now a small hotel.
