This new and improved home for the College of Home Economics became a reality largely through the determination of the college’s dean, Katherine Kilbourne Burgum. Her persistence motivated the state legislature to appropriate funds for construction of an “unscheduled” new home economics building. Also including a 4-H conference center, it connects an earlier home economics building to Memorial Union. Given the complexities of the program and the financing, this classroom building may be regarded as one of the best late-twentieth-century additions to any North Dakota campus. It is a rare example of site-cast-concrete, pan-formed waffle-slab construction with brick cladding. The building acknowledges the differing orientations and relationships to other buildings and campus open space. It is difficult to classify this building stylistically, but it aspires to late-twentieth-century Scandinavian modernism in the manner of Alvar Aalto.
