The dedication of this building marked the culmination of efforts to construct a suitable fireproof gymnasium and physical education building on the campus. The design is an example of S. Marius Houkom’s best Art Deco work. A projecting central entrance is gabled with a three-arched arcade faced with geometric brick patterns. Inset above the entrance is a large stone plaque with a carved-stone bison representing the school’s mascot. A decorative zigzag brick pattern follows below the gable line at the roof. The east and west sides of the building are organized into six bays, with brick buttresses dividing each bay into two-story arched window pairs. The basement contained a sixteen-lap indoor track, rifle range, and a large natatorium. The building is now used for assembly, athletics, and military training programs.
