Constructed for Beydler, a Mennonite from eastern Pennsylvania who had settled in the Shenandoah Valley by 1783, the Federal house is an L-shaped brick building situated on a banked site. The steep grade of the bank provides a full-story stone basement at the rear of the main section. A two-story brick addition, appended to the original building around 1850, doubled the size of the house. Unusual for its fine brickwork, the house has walls laid in Flemish bond on the south and north elevations, a molded brick cornice at the front and rear, and brick jack arches over all window and door openings. A brick smokehouse/ summer kitchen with diamond-shaped vents in each gable end occupies a banked site east of the house.
