Presbyterian Church of the Pilgrims

1928, Flournoy and Flournoy. 2201 P St.

Benjamin Courtland Flournoy's English education is very much in evidence in his Church of the Pilgrims with its attached cloisters. The forms and surfaces are a greatly reduced modern adaptation of the decorated phase of English Gothic ecclesiastical structures. The light-colored, smooth Alabama limestone was perfectly suited to the sleek lines and surfaces and to the soaring 112-foot tower, with lancet windows, corner buttresses, and finials that are the recognizable descendants of their ancestors.
