One wild night, some think, the jam-packed Roma Bar fell into the basement. Actually it was carefully moved downstairs piece by piece, allowing a much higher roof and atrium to capture some of the barroom racket. Supposedly the rubblestone basement walls conceal a tunnel to nearby St. Patrick's Church, dug to supply the Roma with sacramental wine during Prohibition. An 1860 Brunswick-Balke-Collender carved walnut back bar with 12-foot French mirrors graces this lively tavern. The round arches of the bar mirrors are reflected in new wall mirrors, which help to visually enlarge the tiny, crowded space.
