The heavy massing of this church is relieved somewhat by the large, round-arched windows and the three-story stone bell tower with a bell-shaped roof. The exterior is shingle and “green stone,” a greenish-to-reddish sandstone found near Manitou Springs. The addition uses stucco instead of natural stone but, according to its architect, Elizabeth Wright Ingraham, tries to “keep the spirit of the original by incorporating its banding, shadow lines, overhang, stained glass, fenestration, and roof pitch.” Ingraham also designed the Vista Grande Community Church (1985) at the southwest corner of Montebello Drive and Union Boulevard, with dramatic concrete paneled walls topped by a barrel vault of ribbed copper supported by laminated oak beams and an interior lighted by glazed end walls and a narrow, full-length skylight.
