1885, W. F. Ellis, Jr. 506 N. Cascade Ave. (northwest corner of St. Vrain St.) (NR)

Once home to Colorado philanthropist Judson Moss Bemis, this and its next-door neighbor have been converted to a hostelry, joined at the rear through a former outbuilding. Both houses are clapboard in the Queen Anne Style, with elaborate shinglework on the Bemis House. Dormers and gables in the deep-pitched roof and a wrap-around porch capitalize on views of the neighborhood and of Monument Valley Park. Judge Bemis, one of thousands who flocked to Colorado Springs for a tuberculosis cure, founded the business administration and banking schools at The Colorado College. His daughter, Alice Bemis Taylor, continued her father's support of the college and led the crusade to build the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center.
