The Office of the Supervising Architect in Washington worked with local architects such as Benjamin Viney. With hooded dormers and a metal hipped roof, the tan brick post office is defined by recessed two-story panels separated by pilasters, and Renaissance Revival and classical detailing in terracotta and limestone. The additions have flat roofs, with solar panels added in 1980.

As with other post offices, the style shows the aesthetic conservatism characteristic of government buildings. The design is consistent with the classicism preferred by James Knox Taylor, expectedly symmetrical, sophisticated, and refined in the federal image. The lobby's marble wain-scoting reflects comparatively generous pre-1929 budgets for federal buildings.
