In the 1970s Boulder closed a section of its major retail street to motor vehicles and landscaped it with plants, sculpture, and pedestrian amenities. The mall attracts shoppers, tourists, business people, students, unofficial performing artists, sidewalk vendors, and people watchers. At 646 Pearl, Frenchman Anthony Arnett built Arnett House (1877), the town's finest early Queen Anne Style house, with a fanciful, three-story mansard tower, and the demolished Arnett Hotel (1875), 1025 Pearl. Also of note are the venerable Macky Building (1860), 1242 Pearl, and the Citizens National Bank (1899; 1976, restoration and addition, Everett Zeigel Architecture), 1426 Pearl, an Italian Renaissance Revival gem with fluted columns on an exuberant facade.
