This Art Deco replacement for an Italianate courthouse destroyed in 1932 by fire was considered shockingly ultramodern when built. The stepped-back building, designed by the son of Denver architect Glen Wood Huntington, uses sandstone blocks taken from bridge abutments of the dismantled Switzerland Trail railroad. The blocks were trucked to the site, then sized and cut on the courthouse lawn. International Style wings (1962, Hobart Wagener) now enclose a small courtyard on the north. Rather than make further additions, the county moved expanding offices into the Elks Lodge (1904), a two-story brick building with garland frieze and stone trim at 2045 13th Street.
