1898, George Hyder. 934 Pearl St.

Smooth and rough pink sandstone trims this fancy, two-story brick edifice posing as a Romanesque fortress. A grand, stepped-arch entry in a protruding central bay is repeated by second-story arches amid elaborate brick courses, corbeled brick, and a crenelated parapet. Hardwood floors used for drills also made it ideal for weekly dances and for basketball games. At one time it was converted to a laundry and, more recently, to offices.
