A second five-bay brick house offers dramatic contrast to the nearby palace. While the palace is assertive, with an oversized cupola and a balustraded platform above a sharply pitched roof, the Wythe House, forty-some years younger, is calm and understated. The inside is as balanced as the repose of the exterior promises. Fireplaces are carefully worked into the transverse partition to serve a nearly identical pair of entertaining spaces at the front and private rooms at the rear upstairs, all reached by a central stair passage.
