The best mid-nineteenth-century house built in Williamsburg is the only one of its date to survive largely intact. Mayor Lemuel J. Bowden purchased the lot from Bruton Parish Church and constructed his show house with machinemade face bricks and stylish Greek Revival woodwork at a time when most property owners satisfied the demands of current taste with a few mantels and a coat of red or white paint on the old brickwork.
