Many of the Williamsburg houses that have become familiar images of early American life were built by successful artisans and retailers in the third quarter of the eighteenth century. A prominent example is that of silversmith James Geddy, Jr., who demolished his parents' old house and in 1762 replaced it with this two-story, center-passage house. An original ell contains Geddy's large reception room, which once opened directly onto Palace Green.
