The most modest surviving early house in Williamsburg, the Quarter began with a single room on the opposite (east) side of the chimney. The present front room was constructed early in the nineteenth century, its frame exposed and whitewashed inside. The Quarter's character is sufficiently rough hewn to have made it the actor John Wayne's favorite residence whenever he stayed in Williamsburg.
