With its rusticated limestone walls and bracketed mansard roof covered in pressed copper shingles, this building is a major presence on Main Street. For many years Samuel Calif, who came here from Iowa, operated a small grocery/general store on the ground floor, had his family residence above, and boarding rooms in the recessed wing of the building, which is fronted by a two-story porch. The building was restored and opened in 1971 as a museum and exhibit space, focusing on the history of the city.
