Commercial Building (George Wythe Hotel)

Commercial Building (George Wythe Hotel) Virginia Department of Historic Resources
1927, Frye and Stone. 170 E. Main St.

The Wytheville Rotary Club was the driving force behind construction of this former hotel. The 1920s was a decade when city boosters across the nation vied to encourage new business by sponsoring or supporting the construction of hotels. This four-story brick building is a rather austere version of Colonial Revival with a flat roof and urns marking the roofline. Flanked by slightly projecting pavilions, the central section has a three-bay entrance portico and the first story has the double windows with large fanlight transoms often used in early-twentieth-century Colonial Revival buildings. The hotel closed in 1973 and was occupied by various banks until 2011, when it was sold.
