Until it closed in 2007, Royal Dairy served thousands of gallons of ice cream to residents and tourists. During the mid-twentieth century many dairies in dairy-rich regions of Virginia operated restaurants specializing in ice cream treats, but most have disappeared. The one-story combination restaurant and former dairy-processing plant is a sleek Moderne building faced with glazed cream-colored tiles and yellow brick courses. Glass blocks frame the central entrance. The building's clean, streamlined image and popular milk shakes made the former Royal Dairy a local landmark.
