Radford's primary downtown commercial area extends west from the university campus for several blocks along E. Main Street. Lined on both sides with mostly two- and three-story brick commercial buildings, the district is occasionally punctuated by a modern element such as a fast-food drive-through restaurant. A few freestanding buildings, including the former two-story brick Colonial Revival U.S. Post Office (1940, Louis A. Simon, Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury) at 1007 E. Main, lend additional variety to the otherwise simple regularity of the Italianate-influenced streetscape. The post office includes the WPA-funded painting The Return of Mary Draper Ingles (1942) by Alexander B. Clayton.
