This building's initial brick section, which is now the rear wing, is reputed to have been a tavern. Local businessman Treadwell Smith constructed, c. 1820, the brick two-story, five-bay, Federal front section as his residence. The house is situated on the corner of two major streets and when the intersection was widened in the twentieth century the house's front porch with double stairs was removed. It was replaced with the current pediment above a lowered doorway with an elongated surround and a secondary tall, glazed transom.
