One of Virginia's finest examples of Federal architecture, Annfield was constructed by Matthew Page, who named it for his wife, Ann Randolph Meade, sister of Episcopal bishop William Meade. It was here that Robert E. Lee's wife, Mary Custis, was born in 1808 when her mother was visiting relatives. The two-story house, built of the same local limestone used at Fairfield (CL9), has a seven-bay symmetrical facade dominated by a delicate two-tiered three-bay Ionic portico with a fanlight in the pediment and elaborate Chinese latticework of the upper-story railing. Four brick chimneys project from the hipped roof, which is crowned with a balustraded deck. Annfield is Clarke County's best example of a late-eighteenth-century dwelling strongly influenced by the designs of Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio.
