The newly joined college looked to Baltimore for architects who designed a remarkable Gothic complex that recalls both the German Gothic tradition and the English Perpendicular Collegiate at Oxford. The miniature Gothic structures flanking Old Main housed student debating societies. The interior of Old Main now has little of interest save for a handsome date plaque in the entrance hall. To the rear is a Queen Anne gymnasium (now a student activities center) by James H. Warner, the architect of Central Market (LA9). It was completed in 1890.
