During the 1920s, the college leadership heard the siren's song of American colonial and commissioned Philadelphians Day and Klauder to rebrand the college. They proposed reorienting the campus on a new axis and quadrangle to the north. Two handsome brick Georgian Revival dormitories, Dietz and Santee—miniatures of the firm's work at Pennsylvania State University and the University of Delaware—were intended to frame an axis linking the old campus to the new quadrangle. The cross axis was undermined by Minoru Yamasaki's prosaic Steinman College Center (1973–1976), which respected the quadrangle plane of Klauder's dormitory at the expense of the more important axial line.
