Despite the town's largely English stock, Christ Episcopal Church was not chartered until 1841. Forty-four years later, the congregation commissioned Joseph H. Pierce and Otis Dockstader from Elmira, New York, to erect this picturesque rock-faced Gothic Revival church. The tower, more Romanesque than Gothic, is its most impressive feature. Corner buttresses climb high on the church's north side, a round tower bulges from the south, and at the base of the spire the conical roofs of round corner turrets rise as robust pinnacles. The church's aisle-and-nave plan is clearly articulated on its unusually long sides.
