First United Methodist Church is a late but exuberant expression of Richardsonian Romanesque by an architect from nearby Athens. Two towers dominate the facade: a ninety-three-foot-high six-stage pyramidalroofed square tower and a shorter octagonal tower with a conical roof. The brick walls, rock-faced bluestone trim, and shingled entrance porch are rich in color and texture, but the effect is lessened with the replacement of its copper roof tiles. Inside, a gallery sweeps across three sides of the sixty-foot-square auditorium.
