Situated on a hill overlooking a beautiful valley formed by Walker and Brushy mountains, Eagle Oak is one of Bland County's premier landmarks and one of its largest surviving nineteenth-century brick dwellings. Built for Captain Samuel Newberry, a Civil War veteran who served in the Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate, Eagle Oak represents the comfortable homestead of one of the county's most prominent late-nineteenth-century citizens. Inspired by mid-nineteenth-century publications promoting Italianate houses, the irregularly shaped building is enlivened with bay windows and tall gables. Contributing to the massive quality of the house are heavy wooden cornices and a front porch with thick, tapering square posts. Probably dating from the same period of construction is a large brick outbuilding with an overhanging gable roof located near the house.
