This handsome Classical Revival building, the embodiment of pride in education, is entered through a three-bay Corinthian portico plastered white in contrast to its red brick walls. Wings flank the central block and an octagonal belfry set on a square base rising above the central pediment gives the building further distinction. In contrast, standing by its side is the now-empty former Bedford Elementary School (1912, Heard and Cardwell). With its stuccoed walls, modest sprinkling of tile decoration, triple windows, red tile roof with deep eaves supported by paired brackets, and tall parapet, this building reflects the interest in Craftsman and Spanish forms in the early twentieth century. The former middle school was gutted by fire in January 2020 and is being rehabilitated for new purposes.
