This Carpenter's Gothic church is the oldest surviving religious structure in Virginia City. The congregation obtained land for the building through insider stock trading that yielded enough funds to obtain the site and pay for construction. The church's board-and-batten construction is formalized by the large size of the battens and the application of paint (for it is certain that the building was always painted). Few board-and-batten churches are found in Nevada, as this method of construction was usually reserved for utilitarian buildings such as stables or sheds. Little of the original interior remains, but the tall facade, culminating in a narrow bell tower, stands out on South C Street.
