Designed by a Chicago firm noted for its YMCA buildings, Chicago industrialist Cyrus McCormick Jr. provided half of the building's budget. McCormick was the son of Cyrus H. McCormick, inventor of the mechanical reaper (see
RB38
) and a native of neighboring Rockbridge County. Now a condominium, the Renaissance Revival, four-story red brick building employs light-colored stone for the belt courses, window surrounds, and paired Tuscan columns framing the entrance. The small windows at the attic level appear as part of a deep cornice and give a strong finish to the building.
