One of the few Gothic Revival cottages in Staunton, this house was built for French immigrant Dr. Jean Charles Martin Merrillat, who was head of the Virginia School for the Deaf and the Blind (AU16). A three-bay porch leads to a recessed central block flanked by slightly projecting wings. The picturesque board-and-batten house has steep gables, diamond-paned windows, decorated barge-boards, and a lovely finial.
