One of the oldest structures in town, this building initially housed the Holmes store, which later was known as the Lawson store. In the 1920s, Alfred Awong took over the space, and for the next forty years, the Awong Brothers Store operated here. The credit union purchased the property in 1970 and completed a sensitive renovation in 1979. W. H. Holmes had operated a store in the Waipio valley during the 1870s, and in 1882 relocated his business to Honokaa. Subsequently, he expanded his operations to Hilo. His younger brother M. V. Holmes assumed responsibility for the Honokaa store; a still younger brother, E. N. Holmes, purchased the Hilo store in 1894. Upon the death of M. V. Holmes in 1905, E. N. Holmes also acquired the Honokaa store.
